Make A Soft Plastic Mold

Create soft plastic molds to make fishing lures.

Soft plastic molds are an inexpensive way to duplicate a particular item that is used a lot. Many fishermen make soft plastic molds to re-create their favorite fishing lures. Fishing lures are small, making them easy to make a mold from, and the mold can be reused again and again.

Instructions

1. Prepare a work area on a flat surface using newspaper.

2. Select a lure you would like to make a mold for.

3. Apply a layer of Vaseline on the lure and the inside of the plastic mold cup.

4. Mix the plaster of Paris as per the manufacturer's instructions and pour the plaster into the plastic mold cup. There are other things that can be used to hold the plaster, such as pie tins, plastic bowls or small cardboard boxes.

5. Place the lure in the plaster and press the lure down so that the entire lure is covered except for a small portion of the top.

6. Allow the plaster to dry or harden. This process can take up to an hour or more depending on the amount of plaster used.

7. Remove the lure very carefully from the mold. If the lure can't be removed from the mold, use a craft knife to gently scrape away some of the plaster from the top of the mold and try to remove the lure again.

8. Coat the inside of the mold with Mod Podge and allow it to dry.
