Use A Project Initiation Checklist

The key to the success of a project is often its organization. People can organize a project and themselves with a project initiation checklist. An initiation checklist might document what you need to begin the project. Furthermore, a checklist breaks down a project into more manageable elements that you or other team members can take action on.

Instructions

1. Consider using project initiation templates for your checklist. Customize a template to each project. Identify a project by filling out basic information. Give your project a name and identify who prepares the checklist plus the date prepared.

2. Enter the project objective and the background information. Remember to include sponsor information.

3. Address the scope of the project, including what business and operations functions are required. Consider using a scoping diagram for clarity.

4. Detail the resources available to the team, including staffing. Assess whether the team needs more resources in addition to the responsibilities of the people involved in the project. Include any additional training needed. Be sure to include who carries out the project initiation, like a project manager.

5. Make a schedule part of your project initiation checklist. Identify when the project starts and when it should end. Indicate project targets. Include any interim products within the project targets.

6. Remember to include cost information, from estimates of time costs to actual material costs.

7. End a project initiation checklist with the signatures of team members who need to approve the project initiation. Often, a client who requests the project approves the project initiation too.
