Clean Shipping Containers

Shipping containers are used to build homes

Shipping containers are large, stainless steel crates used to store and ship goods. They are attached to 16-wheelers, trains and loaded onto ships. Green builders collect old containers to build homes and offices. Many people see shipping containers as the solution for home building in developing countries. One of the main drawbacks in using these containers is that they are often dirty. However, there is a simple way to clean shipping containers before using them as viable construction material.

Instructions

1. Sweep out the container floor to remove all large debris.

2. Spray all the surfaces with the high power hose. Concentrate on one area at a time. Pay close attention to corners and seams, where dirt builds up.

3. Find all the rust spots and treat them with white vinegar, which is a natural rust remover. Wet a cloth with the vinegar and spread liberally over the rusted surface.

4. Rub tough spots with aluminum foil to remove the rust stain more quickly.

5. Wait for the entire shipping container to dry. Sand the surface with a medium-grit sandpaper.

6. Paint the inside with primer and wait for it to dry.

7. Paint all the surfaces with the paint of your choice and wait for it to dry. Make sure the paint is suitable to use on stainless steel surfaces. Most exterior paints are useful for this job. Check with a sales person or the manufacturer if you are unsure.
