Install a deadbolt lock on your front door.
Apartment dwellers face the same security concerns as any homeowner, with a few additional ones. Common spaces and living in close proximity to others are factors that present extra security issues. Examine your apartment and the complex you live in to ensure that you are taking all precautions regarding your home security.
Instructions
1. Get your locks changed if you've moved into a new apartment or home. Install a heavy-duty deadbolt lock to your front door if you don't already have one. A high quality rim lock will also work.
2. Lock your door every time you leave the apartment. A lock provides security only when you use it.
3. Lock all windows and any doors that go outside to your backyard, balconies, or rooftops. This step is especially important if you live on a first floor apartment, where intruder access is easier than on upper floors.
4. Never let anyone you don't know into your apartment complex or home. Alert the building manager if the front entry system is not operating correctly or if you observe non-residents coming and going. Don't leave any kind of message on your door that you are out.
5. Install a peep hole on your front door if you don't already have one. This way, you can see who is at the door before you open it. Always look through the peep hole before you open your door.
6. Add a burglar alarm system if possible.
