Tips On Setting & Achieving Goals

Achieving a desired goal is something worth pursuing.

The majority of people achieve the goals they set for themselves via hard work and perseverance. Even so, in the midst of the chasing after a goal or working with dedication to achieve something, there are things you can do to make the journey easier or less confusing.

Believing

Part of the process of working to reach a goal is truly believing deep down that you can achieve it. This does not always come naturally to everyone, particularly if your goal is lofty or hard to attain. For five to seven minutes every day, try visualizing yourself achieving your goal. Picture how wonderful it will feel to accomplish it and how it will affect your life. At other points during your day, make a conscious effort to think positively and believe that with each passing day, you're getting closer to realizing your goals.

Examination

Always write down your goals and why you want to achieve them, as well as why you think you can achieve them. Be honest with yourself and make sure that achieving these things is something you want for the right reasons, which usually involve some connection to pleasing yourself and not parents or spouses. Also, make sure you're not setting yourself up for disappointment; examine your goals and make sure you have a realistic shot at achieving them. For example, if you're 35 years old and want to win an Olympic gold medal as a women's figure skating champion and you've only just started skating, this most likely isn't something that you can achieve. But that's okay. You can still win other, smaller competitions if you work hard.

Help

Always ask others for help. The loftier your goals are, the more likely that you'll be in need of someone to guide you along the way. It's always okay to have questions, and no one expects you to know everything. Asking for help is a sign of strength, a sign of security with oneself. When working toward a difficult goal, you're bound to have questions along the way and you're not always going to be able to muddle through things yourself. Finding a good teacher, guide or mentor can help this process greatly.

Encouragement

Give yourself lots of encouragement along the path toward your goal. This will help you to not feel like a slave-driver of your own life and assist you into the good habit of "smelling the roses" along the journey of life. Celebrate small accomplishments that you make that put you closer to achieving your goal. Write them down on a calendar, personal planner or list.
