Change The Smartwater Filter On A Ge Refrigerator

In addition to making your water and ice taste better, GE SmartWater filters can remove chlorine, odor and lead from your refrigerator's water supply. These filters last for about six months or 300 to 500 gallons of use before you need to change them. To determine the model of replacement filter needed for your GE refrigerator, check your owner's manual or remove the current cartridge and look for a model number on the label. If you're unsure of the model, take the cartridge to a local GE retailer for assistance. When you have the replacement in hand, changing the filter is a relatively painless process.

Instructions

1. Remove the old filter by turning it slowly counterclockwise. Do not pull down on the filter. A few drops of water may trickle out when you remove the cartridge. In most GE refrigerators, the water filter is in the rear, upper-right corner of the refrigeration compartment. If you have difficulty locating the filter, consult your owner's manual.

2. Remove the adapter if you are replacing a SmartWater cartridge MWF or GWF. Turn the adapter a quarter-turn clockwise to remove it.

3. Find the year and month stickers that came with the new cartridge. Remove the stickers and put them on the replacement cartridge so you will know when it's time to replace the filter again.

4. Fill the replacement cartridge with tap water.

5. Align the arrow on the new cartridge with the arrow on the cartridge holder then set the top of the new cartridge inside the holder but do not push it up.

6. Turn the cartridge clockwise, which will lift it into position. The cartridge will move about a 1/2-turn then stop. Do not over-tighten the cartridge.

7. Run the water dispenser for about three minutes.

8. Reset the "filter change" indicator light if your model has this feature. On some models, you reset the light by pressing and holding the "reset water filter" pad on the dispenser for a few seconds until the light shuts off or turns green. If you don't see this button on your refrigerator, check the instruction manual for details on resetting the light.
