One is its suitability to the water conditions in your area and the other is its ability to reduce/remove contaminants. Maintenance
Water treatment systems require a certain level of regular maintenance so that the appliance can deliver good quality water suitable for consumption. Distillation units should be cleaned frequently and filter cartridges should be changed every once in a while. Monitoring a house water treatment device regularly will give a good indication of whether it is operating effectively.
Alternatives
In some instances, purchasing a house water treatment system may not be feasible. In case there is a temporary contamination of the water supply and permanent treatment is not necessary, then the equipment could be rented for the required period of time. Renting will help you to become familiar with the usage of the equipment prior to purchase. For many people, the cost is often the deciding factor that determines the purchase or rental of a house water treatment system.
