Replace the Filter in a GE SmartWater
GE's water filtration systems are called SmartWater systems. Chlorine, which causes the swimming pool-like taste associated with many municipal water systems, is reduced 98.90% on average by SmartWater cartridges. Even asbestos, which can cause cancer, is reduced by 99.95% if it is present in the pre-filtered water. However, the filter will need to be replaced occasionally if you want to receive the maximum benefit from your SmartWater system.
Instructions
1. Monitor the water filter status light on a regular basis. When it turns red, it's time to replace the filter. The filter is located in the back upper corner of the refrigerator. Remove it by slowly turning it to the left. Water may drip from the filter when you turn it, this is normal.
2. Fill the new cartridge with water.
3. Line up the arrow on the cartridge with the center of the holder.
4. Slowly turn it to the right until the cartridge stops. It rotates about a quarter-turn. Don't over tighten it and don't push it up into the holder.
5. Reset the status light. Press and hold the button marked "Reset" for three seconds.
6. Flush the new cartridge at full flow for three minutes. This will clear the line.
