Renewing your passport can be done in person, online or through the mail. Some of the required information for a renewal includes when your last passport was issued, legal documentation of name changes due to marriage or adoption, and 2 recent photographs.
Paperwork
The passport agency requires 2 photos that have been taken within the last 6 months, along with the standard DS-82 form. This form takes a history of all pertinent identity information, including the name and birth place of the applicant's parents.
Pricing
There is a $75 application fee and a $25 execution fee. If you are submitting your application by mail, then there is no execution fee. If you're under 16 years old, then the fee is $60 with a $25 execution fee. There is a $60 fee for expedited service which gets the passport book back to you in as little as 2 weeks.
Considerations
If your old passport has suffered any damage beyond the common wear and tear, such as tears or alterations, you must apply in person to verify your identity. There are officially designated outlets, such as the Post Office, where this can be done.
Time Frame
If your last issued passport was less than 15 years ago at the time of renewal, you can apply by mail and submit the old passport, which will expedite the process. If it's been more than 15 years, you must apply as if this is your first passport.
Warning
If an individual is behind in child supports payments of more than $2,500, they are ineligible for passport renewal. Payment arrangements must be on file with the state and certified with the Department of Health and Human Services.
