When your business has grown to the point where you need to hire a marketing manager, you want to make the best choice that you can. The marketing manager needs to be able to understand your needs and fit in with your corporate culture, while pumping up your business and taking you to the next level.
Instructions
1. Utilize the services of an agency if you don not want to take the time to read all the resumes you will receive and vet all the candidates. If your time is valuable, then it will be worth the fees for an experienced agency to fill your position, or at least send you qualified candidates that they have already screened thoroughly.
2. Consider outsourcing this piece of your business to a firm that does nothing but marketing in your specific industry. You can use them when you need them and not have to keep one person on the payroll during slow or irrelevant times of production in your business. You can keep a number of agencies on call to handle special needs, such as press releases, trade shows and advertising buys.
3. Pass the candidates around to your senior management and other key staffers if you are bringing a marketing manager on the payroll. Let each person spend a little time with the candidate and listen closely to the feedback. While you, as the boss or hiring manager, need to like person and her credentials, she will ultimate be working closer with other department heads and needs to win their approval as well.
4. Look for enthusiasm and creativity in a marketing manager when you are interviewing for the post. Often times, other experiences, rather than previously held marketing jobs, are more telling about the kind of employee you are getting. Ask each candidate for a little plan for a one-day promotional event. Watch how they present their ideas, then listen to your gut and your other managers.
