Write A Biography For Web Sites

A biography for a website is an informative explanation of an individual's background. It also may describe a company or organization. Copy written for the web must be short and succinct.

Instructions

1. Review the resume or CV to find out the person's current employer, title and experience. Highlight the important facts.

2. Interview the person. Ask questions about their interests, hobbies, past experiences and goals. This will give you interesting material for the biography.

3. Find an interesting fact or piece of information to start the biography with. The lead, or beginning, of the biography is vital because if you lose your reader from the start, they will not read the necessary information that will follow.

4. Begin the lead of the biography stating who you are are talking about and follow with an interesting fact about the person. For example: "New York Times" bestseller author Amy Cook wrote her first book at the age of five. That lead is more interesting and informative than saying the following:Amy Cook, a "New York Times" bestselling author, has been writing for a long time.

5. Follow the lead with other necessary or interesting information. This may include accomplishments, education, past employers or experiences. The biography should contain information that the website visitor needs to know. For example: "New York Times" bestseller author Amy Cook wrote her first book at five years old. Since then, she has authored 25 award-winning books. Her first book was published while she was an undergraduate student at State University, pursuing a bachelor of arts in creative writing.

6. Edit the biography for length. It may be of any length, but keep the paragraphs short and to-the point.

7. It is optional to edit the biography according to Associated Press style. Web content is often written in AP style. This is not a required step, but following some type of writing standard looks professional and helps to reassure that the writing is professional.
