Write An Effective Headline

An effective headline is essential for writing successful copy

When people see the copy that you have written, they will decide in a matter of seconds whether or not they are going to take the time to actually read it. The key to getting potential customers to read your copy is an effective headline. A great headline will let potential readers know that your copy is worth their attention. Below are some ideas for writing an effective headline for your copy.

Instructions

1. Make the headline urgent. This will give the read a sense that she needs to read your copy immediately. Give your headline a sense of urgency by using a time element. Use a specific unit of time in your headline, such as days or weeks. You can also use a time limited offer in your title that offers potential customers a discount or special deal.

2. Make your title unique. Make sure that your title says something new or something in a different or special way.

3. Make your headline as specific as possible. Use your headline to sum up your copy as concisely and specifically as possible.

4. Use your headline to convey usefulness. Let the reader know, through the headline, how reading the copy will benefit them. If you are writing to promote a certain product or service, use the headline to tell a potential customer how the product or service will benefit him.

5. After you write your headline, ask yourself if it meets all of the above criteria. It is unlikely to be strong in all four areas but if it does not strongly represent at least three, consider a rewrite.
