Subwoofer design programs help you create the enclosure for your subwoofer.
A subwoofer is a loudspeaker that plays sounds at the bass (lower pitch) frequency levels. These devices generally range in diameter from 8 to 21 inches, and they usually have a range of 20 to 200 Hertz (Hz). The subwoofer box is the casing around the loudspeaker. There are software programs available that help you to design your subwoofer box.
AJ Audio
The AJ Audio Subwoofer Design Software allows you to create designs for bandpass, vented and sealed boxes. Bandpass is a filter that allows certain frequencies to pass through it while denying others. Vented allows you to play music louder since it promotes air movement, and a sealed subwoofer box is completely airtight. The AJ Audio Subwoofer Design Software also helps you create subwoofers for vehicles, guitars and home theater systems, and the tools in this program are for home users and do-it-yourselfers. Features of this program include the ability to figure out box dimension, and you can calculate box resonance, frequency and power response. You just need to input your parameters, and the system will output the frequency response related to those coordinates. This is a freeware program, which means that you can download, use and share this program without paying a licensing fee.
Box Designer
The Box Designer Gold Edition 2.1 allows you to create 3D models of your subwoofer, and it uses computer-aided design (CAD) principles to help you with the steps. You can input your parameters, and the system will output a simulation of what the final construction will look like. You can also do the calculations of the box frame. This is a Windows-based program, and it uses a graphical user interface (GUI) to help you with the process. A GUI uses checkboxes and radio buttons to run commands. This is a free program.
Subwoofer Design Toolbox
This program costs between $19 and $29 in 2010, and you have the choice to order a floppy disk or compact disc (CD), or you may download the program from the site after you purchase it. The Subwoofer Design Toolbox allows you to design both rectangular and wedge boxes, and you do this by inputting the dimensions of your box. You have the choice of designing your box based on box volume or box dimensions. Other features of this tool include the ability to compare different subwoofer boxes, and the program will make recommendations on when you should install a port. You can also compare frequency responses and magnitude frequency response points with this program.
