What Does The Sweden Flag Represent

What Does the Sweden Flag Represent?

The Swedish flag, one of the oldest flags in the world, is bright and easily recognizable. Although is it inspired by the Swedish coat of arms (a blue background with three yellow crowns), the simplicity of the nation's flag design is not to be underestimated.

Appearance

The flag of Sweden is blue with a yellow cross. Most Scandinavian countries feature a cross on their flags.

Color Meanings

For Swedes, the blue on the flag represents truth, loyalty and justice. The yellow represents generosity.

History

The design of the Swedish flag goes back to the 16th century. It was officially readopted by Sweden in 1906.

Protocol

A Swedish flag should never drag on the ground or become faded or ragged. If it is no longer in good condition, it needs to be burned.

Celebrations

Sweden's annual Flag Day falls on June 6. The reign of King Gustav I Vasa began on that date back in 1523.
