Route Planning For Truck Drivers

Proper route planning is essential to avoid damage to private and public property.

It is important for truck drivers to plan routes to avoid unexpected delays and potentially dangerous situations. The goal of route planning is to transport the load safely from point A to point B as quickly as possible with the least amount of miles.

Overpasses

Low overpasses must always be avoided. Generally, all interstate bridges are of legal height, but a driver must be especially aware of overpass height if he is transporting an oversize load. Low clearance locations and restricted routes are listed by state in the Deluxe Motor Carrier's Road Atlas, which is available at most major truck stops.

Bridges

Bridges with weight restrictions must be taken into consideration. Secondary roads with narrow bridges are a particular problem. The width of the load being transported must be considered and proper side clearance must be given when crossing bridges.

Frost Laws

Certain states have frost laws in the winter. During these times, the gross weight of the vehicle has to be reduced a certain amount of percentage points, according to that particular state's law. Most interstate roads are excluded, but secondary roads are affected by frost laws.
