A sincere compliment can go a long way, including when praise is dispensed by managers and other leaders in the workplace. Today's employees feel a lot of pressure, with many concerned about their jobs, perhaps forgoing salary increases and other forms of remuneration as employers seek to remain competitive. According to the University of Michigan, even during difficult times "...meaningful rewards and recognition provide an effective, low-cost way of raising morale and encouraging higher levels of performance." Let's take a look at seven employee award ideas you can implement.
Lunch on the House
Many salaried employees are working extra hours to finish up much needed projects and to bring in new business. If you are unable to give bonuses right now, you can explain your predicament to your staff. But consider shutting down the office for two hours one day to host a "thank you" luncheon at a favorite restaurant.
Employee of the Month
An employee of the month program can be a great way to call out the talents of good workers. Recognize your monthly winner in the company newsletter, on the web site, or via an employee meeting. Follow that announcement up with a certificate of recognition and include a gift card. If you can afford to give this person time off, award her with a day off with pay.
Company Suggestion Box
Factories have been using suggestion boxes for years, an excellent way to award innovative employees for their contribution to the business. For accepted and implemented ideas, you can give cash or gift cards or, if the idea saves the company a lot of money, you could give that person 10 percent of the savings for the first year.
Send a Gift Home
Arrange to have flowers, chocolates, balloons or other gift sent to an employee's home as recognition for a job well done. Schedule that delivery to coincide with when they are at home, such as a Saturday no earlier than 9 a.m.
Letter to Employee File
A positive outcome for work well done should also include a letter of commendation to the employee's file. You may not be able to give a raise right now, but that letter will serve as a reminder to you when raises are possible that this employee deserves to be compensated accordingly.
Personalize a Gift
Consider delivering a gift to an employee's work station or desk, especially if that item could come in handy while on the job. A new coffee mug with a sample coffee packet included. A photo frame for the credenza. A new chair to replace their well-worn seat. Your gift does not have to be expensive, but it should be thoughtful.
Relax a Rule
Is there a company rule that can be dropped or modified? Maybe your place of business has battled with Casual Fridays, but you are not comfortable allowing it year-round. Consider adopting Casual Fridays for the summer months, running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Flex time and special time off to give blood, volunteer, or take an elderly family member to the doctor can go a long way in building and sustaining morale.
