Living in an apartment can be noisy.
Living in an apartment can be difficult if you have noisy neighbors waking you up at all hours of the night. Take a deep breath and clamp down on your frustration. You must never yell at or insult your neighbor, as this can lead to a physical altercation. Remain calm and in control, and take steps to remedy the situation.
Instructions
1. Speak to your neighbor in person. Simply knock on the door and explain that the noise is disturbing you. Keep it simple; tell him, "The noise is keeping me awake. I have to be at work early. Can you please keep the noise down?" Your neighbor may not even realize how loud he is. Your simple request may solve the problem.
2. Give the neighbor a note asking him to keep the noise level down. You may need to do this if your neighbor ignored your first request. For instance, he may have lowered his music when you asked, but turned it back up the next night. Include a copy of your lease agreement with the note. Most leases have a clause dealing with noise issues, so read the lease agreement and highlight the applicable section. Knock on the neighbor's door and politely give him the information with your request to please keep the noise down. Alternatively, place the information in his mailbox or under his door.
3. Contact your landlord or management company. If the neighbor continues to be noisy, you will need to get the landlord involved. Call the landlord and explain the steps you have taken to reduce the neighbor's noise level. You should also mail or fax a detailed letter to the landlord or management company explaining the steps you have taken.
4. Call the police. This is a last resort if the problem is not resolved with your previous efforts. You are entitled to the peaceful enjoyment of your apartment. Call them during the noise so they know the full extent of the problem.
