Start Cake Decorating Classes

Cake decorating is a fun and enjoyable hobby that can turn into a business of either making cakes for others or teaching people do it themselves. Because people of all ages and all levels of creativity enjoy this craft, a large pool of potential students is looking to learn new techniques. If you have talent and are comfortable standing in front of an audience teaching people, you can turn your hobby of cake decorating into a business of teaching cake decorating classes.

Instructions

1. Obtain any licensing or inspections before beginning any cake decorating classes, if they are necessary. Health codes may require certain certificates or equipment before someone can operate a business out of their home. A business plan can help narrow what you would like to accomplish with your cake decorating classes and define any goals you set for yourself.

2. Decide what baking or decorating techniques you want to teach, and then write a class syllabus. For example, you might want to focus on teaching about decorating with flowers, working with buttercream, or use the different decorating tips that are available. After you know what you want to teach, break down the tasks into stages and write them down. Look at how you will approach each task, and list any supplies your students will need.

3. Decide how many people you would like to attend each class. Depending on your facilities and the difficulty level of a particular technique, you might prefer one-on-one instruction or a group setting.

4. Locate an area of the house you would like to teach in. If the kitchen is large enough to hold everyone, use that area because all the equipment needed is usually located there. Other places could include a dining room or breakfast area.

5. Preparing the finished product serves two important purposes. First, all cake decorating students will enjoy seeing what they can accomplish when the class is finished. Second, by creating the display, you can refine the syllabus to include steps you may have inadvertently omitted or determine where you can skip steps if time becomes an issue. Photograph the display and include the photo on the final syllabus for the students to take home with them.

6. Assemble all the tools and equipment needed for the class if traveling on location. If conducting a lesson at someone else's home, make sure the work is large enough to accommodate your class. Cake decorating classes for birthday parties and holidays are great and popular with all ages.
