Act Smart

So you're in the business world and have been smart enough to get yourself surrounded by titans, the "captains of industry." But now that you're in the midst of it, you suddenly find yourself panicking. It seems as if suddenly acting smart in front of these people is impossible. Well, don't fret. Here are some tips on act smart in business.

Instructions

1. Create a reason for interfacing with someone. The speed of business moves lightning fast. Big wigs don't have time for you to waste their time. So whenever you speak to someone in business, make sure it is with purpose. Now, that purpose can be to inquire about their kid's baseball game, but at least it's got direction.

2. Know what you want before you ask the question or engage with the other individual. Knowing exactly what you want will allow you to be specific with your requests. When you ask or go after something directly, it gives the other person a respect for you as they see you as confident and therefore smart in your dealings.

3. Determine what their point of view will be before you start a conversation. The best business people know their boss, know their adversary and understand (but not necessarily agree with) their point of view. Think about where they are coming from in the conversation. That way you won't be thrown any curve balls.

4. Listen intently to what they are saying. People in business offer mutual respect to others when they feel they are being heard. By simply listening, you are acting smarter than many other colleagues.

5. Stay current on the topics of your business world. No one in business cares if you know who the new celebrity dating couple are. But they will care if you have a firm grasp on the news and events that are driving your business model. Read, watch and keep on top of things.

6. Clean up the speech. In order to act smart you must speak with a clear, concise, decorum that doesn't sounds like "gangsta rap" or modern teenage slang.

7. Dress appropriately for your job. Believe it or not, how you look can make you act smart. Your appearance will cause the person to make a snap judgment about who you are and what you're all about. By appearing put together, you're halfway home to acting smart in business.
