Running a keyword campaign can be a confusing and frustrating task, especially if you're attempting to track the effectiveness of multiple keywords. Selecting, implementing and tracking individual keyword search terms is critical for any online business, and it can quickly become overwhelming once you have progressed to a few dozen search terms. Managing your search lists is relatively simple, as long as you start early.
Instructions
1. Focus on one set of primary keywords when you first begin your project. Choose four or five of the most relevant terms and work with them until you begin to see results. It will be easier to track your campaigns if you only add a few at a time.
2. Examine your keywords for duplicates. While there are several software solutions for generating massive lists of keywords, it is important to verify that these keywords do not overlap. Investing in duplicate terms will stretch your advertising budget with little benefit to your overall campaign.
3. Track your campaigns with a spreadsheet. Place an entry for each term, your active bid on the term, the usual going rate for an ad placement and add daily or weekly data. You will get an idea of how a term is working compared to your other keywords.
4. Add some sort of tracker to your website. Without the ability to track incoming visitors and how they found your site, your ability to manage your keyword campaigns will be minimal at best. There are several solutions for website statistics including Google Analytics, Site Meter and StatCounter.
5. Keep a constant tab on the ratio between the money you invest in keyword advertising and the results each keyword provides. For example, spending $100 a week on one keyword that lands you 100 visitors a day might be worth it, but if you are getting 10 visitors a day from the keyword you may need to find one that represents a better return on investment.
6. Organize your keyword lists by specific topic. For instance, if you run an electronics website, you should keep keyword advertising split between video games, home theater, digital cameras and MP3 players. Splitting keywords by category makes it easier to track campaigns for large sites.
